Some users here can provide alternative software, but if you are strongly based on actual software and licenses, it cannot help you. Dualboot/VM/remoteStation or not use GNU/Linux and still keep windows only. If you have exact software which needs for your job and doesn't exist replacement, you have to keep windows for it. GNU/Linux is completely different OS, is specialized to FOSS and multi-platform apps. It is problem of companies which you select and bought is proprietary software. These are programs for which there is no Linux version. This is typical question from long-term windows users which feels that windows has no correct direction now but your all software is built and mainly bought for windows platform only. Many games (Proton only applies to Steam and is far from perfect despite what people say, and there are plenty of non-Steam games that don't work at all with Wine from my experience) Small or QoL programs that I use that don't run on Linux: Necessary software I use daily that can't run on Linux: I know that distros themselves aren't going to necessarily make or break the functionality of non-native software, but I'm still a Linux noob at the end of the day so I'm interested in hearing if there are options for people like me. I guess the core of my "question" here is whether or not there's some distro or program that would be worth a try given my repeated failures already. Plenty of others like me would be interested in switching but they rely on software daily that simply can't be ran in Linux. But when added onto the fact that the stuff I actually need won't run either? It's a closed case at that point there's no way I can realistically switch to Linux like that.Īnd the worst part is that I'm not alone. Sure, there's tons of small QoL programs I use in Windows that don't work on Linux, but I could theoretically get past that. Pretty much everything I try to run through it just doesn't work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or maybe I'm just unlucky, but Wine hasn't ever really "saved the day" for me on this stuff. I've successfully got several different distros up and running before, and each time, I'm discouraged to find that a majority of the software necessary for my work has no Linux version or support. My job requires me to use several notation and audio programs on a near-daily basis. The problem is, as always, compatibility. Linux is the only option I see as Mac is not on the table for me personally. I hate what Windows has become and I desperately want to leave it. I've been a Windows user since Windows 95 but have finally reached my limit. I know it sounds like a self-answering question, but I figured I'd discuss/vent it here.
